The Research team provides due diligence and recommendations on a wide range of investment products and strategies. Consisting of more than 35 seasoned and accomplished industry veterans, LPL Financial Research employs the largest independent research team in the nation.
John Lynch is executive vice president and chief investment strategist for LPL Financial. He leads the market and economic research efforts for LPL’s Research team and is responsible for the firm’s strategic and tactical investment advice. Mr. Lynch oversees the ASK Research team of analysts who provide insight and information on research-related questions from advisors.
Mr. Lynch came to LPL with more than 30 years of experience in the financial services industry. Prior to joining LPL in 2017, Mr. Lynch served as senior vice president and regional chief investment officer for the Mid-Atlantic region of Wells Fargo Private Bank, where his responsibilities included economic and market analysis, investment strategy, and portfolio management.
Previously, Mr. Lynch held roles that included chief equity strategist with Wells Fargo Asset Management and chief market analyst for Wachovia and Evergreen Investments. Earlier in his career, he honed his investment skills while working in New York in the securities industry, focusing on equity strategy and portfolio management.
Mr. Lynch has been featured in various media outlets, including CNBC, Bloomberg News, Barron’s Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal.
He holds a BA from Villanova University and a MBA in Finance degree from The College of William and Mary.
As Vice President, Market Strategist Jeffrey (Jeff) Buchbinder is a member of the LPL Financial Research tactical asset allocation committee and is responsible for developing and articulating equity and general market strategy with a focus on sector analysis.
Mr. Buchbinder regularly communicates market strategy to LPL Financial advisors and is a speaker at LPL Financial conferences. Mr. Buchbinder contributes to the Research Department’s flagship publications such as the Weekly Market Commentary and Outlook. He is the primary author of Market Insight, a quarterly review of the financial markets, and Portfolio Compass, a monthly snapshot of LPL Financial Research’s views on the equity, fixed income, and alternative investment markets.
Prior to joining the LPL Financial in July 2003, Mr. Buchbinder worked as an equity research associate for Sanford C. Bernstein in New York and Deutsche Bank in Boston. He has nearly 20 years of investment experience.
Mr. Buchbinder earned his MBA with a concentration in finance from Duke University, and a BA from Northwestern University in economics. He received the Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 2001 and is also a member of the CFA Institute. He currently holds Series 7, 63, and 87 registrations.

Matthew Peterson is a member of the LPL Financial Research Department responsible for developing thorough investment analysis tailored to financial advisors serving high-net-worth clients, as well as optimizing the wealth platform. Mr. Peterson has more than 20 years of experience as an investment professional. His investment research expertise includes the creation of asset allocation models, alternative investment advice, and manager due diligence.
Earlier in his career Mr. Peterson helped found a leading high-net-worth advisory company which was a predecessor to Fortigent, a provider of high-net-worth solutions and consulting services that LPL acquired in 2012. Prior to LPL Financial, Mr. Peterson held roles at GM Advisory Group, most recently as director of strategy and research; and at Newgate Capital, as investment director and portfolio strategist focusing on emerging markets and commodity equities.
Mr. Peterson holds an MBA from Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University and a JD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. He graduated cum laude with a BA in political science from the University of Connecticut. He is active in the World Affairs Forum, an organization sponsoring presentations on global events.
As Vice President, Market Strategist, Ryan Detrick is a member of the LPL Financial Research tactical asset allocation committee, responsible for directly impacting the portfolio decision-making process, as well as a member of the market insights team, developing and articulating equity and general market strategy. In this role, he is a frequent presenter to clients, industry peers, and the national media on emerging and developing market trends.
Prior to joining LPL Financial, Mr. Detrick was building his market knowledge and solid analytical skills. He was a senior portfolio manager at Haberer Registered Investment Advisor (RIA), managing sector asset allocation and strategy for high-net-worth client portfolios. Earlier in his career, he spent over a decade at Schaeffer’s Investment Research. His research and market analysis utilized technical, fundamental, and sentiment methodologies, with a focus on market expectations and advanced options strategies. During his tenure there he was the company’s primary spokesperson and was widely quoted in national media outlets, including appearances on business television and radio programs such as CNBC, Bloomberg TV, and Fox Business.
Mr. Detrick earned his Chartered Market Technician (CMT) designation, a BS in finance from Xavier University, and an MBA from Miami University. He also holds his FINRA Series 7 and 66 through LPL Financial.
John Canally is Chief Economic Strategist at LPL Financial. In this role, Mr. Canally plays an integral role in the development and articulation of LPL Financial market and investment strategies. Mr. Canally has been quoted in many national publications, such as USA Today, Washington Post, and TIME magazine, and is a guest on national business television and radio, including NPR, CNBC, Bloomberg TV, and FOX Business News.
Before joining LPL Financial, Mr. Canally served as senior investment strategist at PNC Wealth Management and PNC Institutional Investments where he assisted in the asset allocation and portfolio strategy decisions for the firm’s $50 billion in assets under management. He was also a member of the firm’s Investment Policy Committee, which oversees all of the investment-related activities of PNC Wealth Management and PNC Institutional Investments.
Prior to PNC, Mr. Canally was the global capital markets strategist at Stone & McCarthy Research Associates. Previously, he held positions on the economic research teams at Dean Witter Reynolds and Prudential Securities in New York City. Mr. Canally began his career as a research associate in the Fiscal Analysis Division at the Congressional Budget Office in Washington, D.C.
He is a Chartered Financial Analyst, a member of the CFA Society of Philadelphia and The CFA Institute. He earned a BA in economics from Villanova University and attended Stern Graduate School of Business at New York University. Mr. Canally is Series 7 and 63 registered.
As Vice President, Traditional Due Diligence, Joseph (Joey) Rackley is a member of the LPL Financial Research Department. Mr. Rackley is responsible for conducting in-depth due diligence, as well as overseeing a team of analysts responsible for diligence on equity, fixed income, liquid real assets, liquid alternative mutual fund, and separately managed account managers. In addition, he actively participates in the selection and monitoring of fixed income, equity strategies, and asset allocation for the Model Wealth Portfolios (MWP), Optimum Market Portfolios (OMP), Personal Wealth Portfolios (PWP), and Strategic Asset Management (SAM) platforms and models.
Prior to joining LPL Financial in 2008, he served as a vice president and research analyst/portfolio strategist in the Advisory Services Group at Wachovia Securities, LLC. His responsibilities included the research and analysis of individual mutual funds and separately managed account strategies. He also was responsible for portfolio construction and performance monitoring of the fee-based wrap program portfolios.
Mr. Rackley received a bachelor’s degree in history from Brown University in 2003. Additionally, Mr. Rackley is Series 7 and 63 registered.

Kirby Horan-Adams is a leading member of the LPL Financial Research team. Mrs. Horan-Adams oversees due diligence, investment recommendations, quantitative analytics, and business management. Her role focuses on managing the strategic direction and supporting the continued growth of the LPL Financial Research platform. She has held previous leadership positions within the Research Department and has been with the firm since 2006.
Prior to joining LPL Financial, Mrs. Horan-Adams was a senior analyst at Cerulli Associates in the intermediary practice where she was responsible for research and consulting focusing on the distribution efforts and strategic positioning of broker/dealers and their advisors.
Mrs. Horan-Adams holds a JD from Boston College Law School, a master’s degree in business administration as well as a master’s of science in finance from Boston College Graduate School of Management, and a bachelor’s degree in math and economics from Trinity College. She received her Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 2006 and became a member of the Massachusetts Bar in 2003. She holds multiple FINRA registrations.
